Butterfly Details

The Great Mormon
Scientific Name:  Papilio memnon
Common Name:  The Great Mormon
Native Location:  Southeast Asia
Description:  This striking species, one of the best flyers that we have in the Conservatory, regularly visits flowers and sits calmly for photographs. The male memnon has blue markings on a black background, while the female has at least 8 different forms. It is thought that the different forms of the female exist to help protect the species by confusing or deterring predators. This species, along with Papilio polytes and other Rutaceae feeders, is considered to be a minor pest on citrus crops.
Host Plant:  Citrus sp.
Butterfly of Month on:  August 2008
