Scientific Name:  Heliconius hecale
Common Name:  Brown Longwing
Native Location:  Central America
Description:  Long wing butterflies are considered some of the staple butterflies that we have here at the Butterfly House. They have a tendency to fly slowly, gathering nectar from the many flowers in the conservatory. They are quite distasteful due to the host plants they eat. There are numerous color forms, we receive this nominate form from Costa Rica. For a photo of the underside of the wings, click here.
