Description: | The buckeye butterfly is most common in late summer into fall. They can become quite numerous, flitting from flower to flower on blooms of milkweed, ironweed and Aster. The caterpillars are laid on host plants by adults that straggle in during the late spring, and adults must either migrate Southward in the late fall or risk freezing. The coloration of this butterfly, especially the underside, can be quite variable ranging from light tan to dark brownish red. |
